Performing in Interviews

I've had many interviews over the years but now sit on the other side of the table. Interviewing, for either party, is a learned skill. Something akin to a dance but it's surprising how many step on their partner's toes. Here are my top ten tips for candidates:
1) Dress the part. Not only will you look and feel good but you are winning before you have even opened your mouth. The reverse is also true.
2) Smile. Not constantly but enough to indicate you would make a positive team addition.
3) Don't force rapport. This can be a banana skin, especially online as you don't have the elevator chat but if it's there then great!
4) Be succinct and relevant with your answers. Waffles are for breakfast.
5) Do research and know your XXXX. That includes preparing insightful questions that demonstrate the former.
6) Don't be frightened to take a risk. Some interviewers may challenge you to test your metal so don't be scared to push back. It may not always pay off but at least you would have made an impression.
7) Show qualification methodology. This especially applies to senior sales people.
8) As an extension of 7, ask early what they are seeking. Write it down. In your closing summary explain how you not only meet but exceed their criteria. This demonstrates you have both listened and processed their information.
9) Show investment in yourself. Extra curricular learning whether online courses, post grad & training seminars etc. At the very least, read.
10) Finish strong. Confirm next steps and follow up with a thank you note and LI connection.
